1/1, Mile 56.1, 10:24 AM
Our first major "incident" of the trip has occurred. Sixteen miles ago, a traffic sign
warned us of an Incident Ahead. Little did we know, or expect, that we would be
completely stopped on 81 a short time later. This brings to mind several nightmarish
times on this very road. Our nearest best guess as to the cause of this delay is that a
truckload of mutant chickens jackknifed across the interstate, spilling all of the fowl onto
the road. Then, a boulder fell onto the chickens.
10:32 AM
Our best guess was wrong; apparently, there's someone on the bridge ahead wanting to
jump. We'll be moving soon, we hear, but we don't know how the situation ended. We
hope everyone's okay.

Subway for lunch and back on the road.

1/1, Mile 258.7, 2:17 PM
We stopped for operation "Capture the Flag," to ensure the VT flags on Midnight Eagle
are secure. Operation completed.
NOTE: Shortly afterward, we lost the flag that we weren't worried about. Godspeed, little
flag.

Crossed into Alabama and the Central Time Zone. Can you say "Time Warp Dance?"
-Tom
1/1, Mile 393.1, 3:14 PM
Gas at Citgo and a stretch break. We're in Fort Payne, AL. Matthew notes that this is the
hometown of country supergroup Alabama. Oh, my aching legs!

1/1, Mile 393.1, 3:31 PM
Back on the road again.
-Tom
1/1, Mile 479.3, 4:44 PM
Driver switch off of Interstate 459 in Alabama. The Derby Parkway exit. We both just
completed a U-turn across three lanes. Apparently, Alabama has plenty of six-lane roads
just laying around waiting to be used. The exchange was successful, and Tom will be
guiding us to our final stop in Montgomery. Birmingham is so close I can taste it! And it
tastes like celery.

1/1, Mile 578.1, 6:14 PM
Pulled into the Oteys' for the night. Woohoo!
